A Research Brief Template for Browser-Based Research

Use a concise research brief template to capture your question, evidence, alternatives, uncertainties, and next action.

Start with the question and its scope

A research brief should make sense to someone who did not watch you browse. Put the question first, followed by the context and constraints. “Choose a scheduling tool” is incomplete; “choose a scheduling tool for ten instructors, with shared availability and a monthly budget ceiling” gives the reader enough context to evaluate the result.

Record the date you reviewed the sources and what was included. A comparison based on public pages is different from a hands-on trial. Be clear about that boundary so the brief does not imply more verification than you performed.

Use a five-part structure

The following outline works for a selection or a research summary:

  • Question: what are we trying to decide or understand?
  • Answer so far: what does the evidence support?
  • Evidence: which pages support the important claims?
  • Uncertainty: what is missing, contradictory, or time-sensitive?
  • Next step: what action would reduce uncertainty or complete the decision?

For a comparison, add the shortlist and the few criteria that change the ranking. For a synthesis, add the main themes and disagreements. Avoid an exhaustive feature inventory unless the reader specifically needs it.

Show how one conclusion follows from a source

Imagine a fictional course-selection brief. “Course A appears suitable for beginners” is a conclusion. “Its syllabus starts with foundational exercises, and the provider lists no prerequisite experience” is the supporting evidence. “We have not reviewed the assignment feedback” is the limitation.

Keeping these three statements separate makes the brief easier to challenge and update. A later discovery about assignments changes one evidence point rather than forcing you to rewrite a confident but vague recommendation.

Make the handoff actionable

End with an owner and a specific action when the work involves a team. “Maya will confirm the export format before Friday” is more actionable than “more research is needed.” For personal research, record the one question you need answered before committing.

Tabmeet can help turn two to eight selected tabs into an initial brief. Review the source details and edit your decision notes before sharing. Pair this template with source fact-checking when the brief contains claims someone else will rely on.
